Modify Product based on Ship-to State?

Anyway to modify products as available only to certain destinations?
We have some products that can't ship to, say, California, due to local law. Anyone have an idea how to do that? Would like to use a table or something like the Shipping Exclude list.

Exclude Shipping States from Specific Products

Has anyone figured out a way to do this? We need to be able to prohibit some items from shipping to several states due to Laws as well. Help would be appreciated!

If the customer has never ordered before, you'd only have IP address to try and identify the location.

You could use some type of IP lookup and based on the result use javascript to show/hide a div that contains the Add to Cart button. Pretty big job me thinks.
