Discount code for coupon

I want to offer our samples at a minimal charge to the customer, and provide them with a coupon code that they could use to recoup the cost if they make a purchase. What is the easiest way to automatically generate and manage those coupon codes? Totally in the dark here. :)

Big duh! When in doubt, actually READ the knowledgebase! :) Entered it as a gift certificate and it worked great.
