Bouncing emails not being received

Our email newsletter subscriber list has many old email addresses that are known to be bad, and bounce back when you email them directly from Gmail etc. But they do not bounce back when I send from the newsletter function.

Are the emails being filtered purposly, or should I be getting these bounces?

How do you handle the email bounces if you don't get them?
