Showing Stock on Re-Orders

Currently if you have an item that is out of stock and you allow backorders, it shows "out of stock" and a negative number indicating then number on hold. But if a customer orders from a previous order, they have no clue that the item is out of stock. Has anyone come up with any sort of notification system so that a customer knows either before they order or after they order that an item is on backorder?
