sitemap is too big?

Can anyone help? We are still setting up our store and today we submitted our sitemap to google and got the following error:

Sitemap file size error
Your Sitemap exceeds the maximum file size limit. Please create multiple Sitemaps containing fewer URLs to meet the file size limit.

Anyone know how to create multiple sitemaps?

we had to break the site map down into 20 separate site maps and submit each one to google. Its a major pain in the but!
