Getting ready to make the leap

After several years of prepping (argh!) we're getting ready to completely close our old store and use 3D exclusively. The store is online, designed and redesigned. We just have a few last things to settle. And of course, some .... ready? ..... 301 Redirect questions!! Imagine that! :rolleyes:

Just need verification on a couple of issues. Web searches, altho' they turn up tons of info on 301s are still just a bit lacking. I get that we put the 301s up here at 3D. But I have these questions:

1. In the "old url" field, do I leave the http://www.myoldsite.com? or just the myproduct.asp ?

2. In the "new url" field do I put in the http://www.mynew3dstore.com? or just the "newproduct_with_a_long_url.asp" link?

3. One site said to redirect http://www.myoldsite.com as well as http://myoldsite.com. Thoughts on that? (hmmm, that may answer #1, come to think of it).

4. Once we have the new store as our sole source, the owner wants to point her DNS for the old domain address at the new name/address. Is this kosher?

5. Any unique problems or obstacles we may find moving from our old cart software hosted somewhere else (i'm avoiding naming the company) to the 3D platform? We're still hosting our domain name at 1n1, rather than at 3D.

6. Anything I've missed?

#3. Depends on how the url was displayed. If it was a ProStore url and you didn't have an ssl you need the whole string for every page and product.

When in doubt always use the whole string, especially with products.
Don't forget to do Google.

3D should have gave you the dns servers to plug into the registrant.

301 redirects

I've exchanged more than a dozen tickets with 3-D cart on the subject - the finally answer is leave the domain off the old and the new URLs.

Its critical that you have accounts open with Google in Bing webmaster tools to look at the crawl errors. One of the things I didn't realize was on an e-commerce site because we had not moved in eight years was that if you have a single product in nine categories when you move you will create 9 - 404's for that one product

Thus even though our website is only about 3500 pages we have more than 12,000 301 redirects in place now
