Meta Tags and Meta Description

Are they necessary? I don't want to overload in google? what about Meta keywords when i add in a product?

Do a google search on meta tags and you will find many people writing articles about best practices, and those people are SEO experts, whereas we are not.

I certainly don't think meta tags can hurt, and I think meta descriptions are important because they do appear as page descriptions in google. If a person search and their keywords appear in the description they will be bolded.
