    Feedback appreciated on our new store

    Well, here is our new store. I'm going for a clean, user-friendly look. I'm a little new at e-commerce so I would appreciate any tips on the layout, design, and usability of this site from my 3dcart colleagues.

    Notice that I have removed the captcha and I tried to clean up the checkout pages a bit. I cleaned up the account pages as well. My target audience includes a lot of seniors, so I enlarged the text in many areas.

    I started with one of 3dcart's $150 templates and have modified it considerably. After all the work I've put into this, I certainly don't want to change templates at this point -- just modify this one as necessary.

    I'm certainly no expert, but you've put a lot of information on the front page. I would rather see more products, images, and points of entry than text about "how to shop." I think the shopping experience should be intuitive rather than directed. Maybe your customers have a lot of patience to read a lot of text. Most people know that you "add to cart" and "check out." You've spent a lot of real estate on instructions. Otherwise, the site looks nicely designed. Good luck.

      A redesigned home page is in the works. Originally, I guess I was going for a "don't make me think" approach. I wanted to make it absolutely clear how to use the site. Like I said, a lot of my customers will be seniors.

      I like what you said about more entry points. And I will be putting those "how to shop" instructions on another page.

        color scheme doesnt seem to work. :(

        unfortunatly I am not a graphics designer so I cant give you any advice on the colors.

          I would suggest making use of more general images like on the home page and other pages that people are likely to see. You can buy rights to use images at istock.com, its better than trying to make images yourself.

          I think you have a good start, you just have to keep improving it, work on your seo, and things will get better.

            I think the lay out and colors are good. You might try making the side navs bg the same as your header (though it might be to much and I'm good with the black) Eliminate the outside spacing of the side navs to line them up to the header size. This would widen your middle putting more content 'above the fold'.

            I agree you should drop 'the how to shop' stuff on the home page it has no SEO value and is a long read. (our customers are older too) We just have basically in one line "you can shop by keyword, mfgr or cat over there" replace it with keyword rich content (not spammy!) like manufactures/products etc you carry in a nicely worded paragraph.
            We're into SEO and if you google 'cross stitch stand' #We're always in the top 3 and # 2-3 if you type in a mfgr name for most products we carry.

            Place the 'how to shop and checkout stuff' one line at a time on appropriate pages for guidance though the shopping/cart/checkout flow. You want just to help them get to the next step. I wouldn't make a page for it except maybe a FAQ page.

              I agree... it's fine to have that, but put it on a different "help" page or something. Replace that content with some relevant text filled with great keywords and it will help your SEO.

                Someone had mentioned that the color scheme didn't work for them. The color scheme isn't bad; the only thing I might say is questionable is the header with the light aqua to white gradient in your header. It is not a perfect match for the rest of the colors used.

                  Actually the color scheme has changed a lot since that earlier comment. I like it a lot better now than what it was. You are seeing the new improved version :) Still room for improvement, however -- a work in progress.
