Issues w/Product Options Add to Cart Button

In the past I had my cart set up so that all products had the button "view details" versus "add to cart" one - changes were made in the templates, store language and I also created a "blank" option in the category wide section so all clicks on the button resulted in going to the product detail page. About 2 weeks ago I did an update on the "look" of the site - colors and background...some minor issues but nothing frustrating until today...I've attempted all day to figure this out with no luck...chatted with live help who submitted a ticket - but thought I'd give the forums a shot.

Right now when you click on the "view Details" button, the item is added to the cart and you are viewing the cart (instead of going to the product detail page). At first I thought I had only an issue on the products grouped together by a search or browse by manufacturer - but then I realized that my search was fine and it was the entire left bar Browse categories that were not working with the "view details" button. However, the confusing part is that ONE product category is working properly (Bracelets) and the rest are not (they are all being added directly to the cart)...so where I originally thought it was something the html templates - now I'm thinking it has to do with the Category Wide options or product options. I've tried editing the options and comparing the one category that's working with all the others with no luck. At this point I'm wanting to take out the button completely but not sure which template and block to do that in...
Any ideas or thoughts before I get drastic?

After more comparisons and testing...I found that the category wide options (under advanced settings) are not being applied to the products within that category...and the "blank" option that I had set at the highest category level is not effective any more. As a get-around until I hear from support...I'm having to individually go into each product and manually load the options (yes the same ones that are already listed in the category wide). But the good news is that once I do this...the "View Details" button is working fine and the products are not automatically being added to the cart without viewing the details page first.

I'll share my secret code. We have a view details and add to cart button. I stole this from our add to Amazon wish list button that no one would help me with. I can appropriate a cart that does design work for those not willing to code for themselves but there seems to be a major conflict of interest here. I did promise Gill that I would behave and in return I now do not receive the support that I need. Anyway grab it while it's still available and good luck with your site:

Thanks for your help! For the time being, I changed the button to 'View Details' and added a *blank* required option to every item in our inventory. That way, the customer is required to view the individual listing page before adding an item to their cart. I couldn't figure out how to add the option globally, so I did it for each item. Time consuming, but easy & worked like a charm. I'm going to have to look at your code this weekend. I'd love to see your code at work. If you wouldn't mind messaging me with your URL, that would be fabulous. If you'd rather stay anonymous, I understand.

We have stayed away from options and gift wrapping I heard they count as a product. Could be wronge.

You know you can download your category and products csv file and update the whole column(s) of interest. This comes in very handy as you make use of the extra fields and other settings.

The solution I provided is a simple version of what we have implemented. We made use of the extra fields and if statements.

For those of you that want to just change the action of this button from add to cart to go to cart.
Go to setting>store>store setting (checkout settings>enable view cart)

View Item Details

Which template are you using?

We are using 30025 with minor mods. Our Cat pages show add to cart but when a customer clicks on that (or the cat pic) it shows product details.

This may be due to the template or may be due to our product options.

BTY - we like the fact that clicking on add to cart on the cat page DOES NOT add to cart. But, I hope we're not losing sales as a result (don't think so....)
