Hiding Empty Categories / SubCategories

Hello all.
We have many listings with multiple categories and sometimes we will remove an item(s) that is no longer available, but the category / subcategory still shows on our site.

The result is a very unprofessional appearance when our customers find an empty category.

Anyone have a quick fix or maybe even a tip on this issue?

We have suggested this as a new feature but we realize this would take time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From your Control Panel you can go to Products->Categories.

Once there you can either remove the category or just select the Hide checkbox and save the changes.

It would be nice if the empty categories get hidden automatically, instead of manually hiding/showing.

We know about the hide / show feature.

We were looking for a more "automated" feature.

You see, when an item is added to a category / subcategory, and you forget that it is hidden, customers simply won't be able to find it unless they specifically search for it or are led there somehow.

We have many categories. We get it, if we had less items / categories, this would not be a problem, but going "niche" is not an option for us.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

^^ Been there, done that ^^. An automated "hide/show" should be nice.

Yes, I have the same problem. Too many products and categories to manually go in and delete or hide categories as they become empty. Either need them to be hidden automatically or at least a way to identify those categories in bulk.

We thought that when a category was "hidden" that the products would be hidden from that category as well.

For example, we have a keepsake product that works well in several categories, including "Valentine's Day" and "Wedding Gifts". When we search for "keepsake", the Valentine's Day" is listed next to the product.

1. Hide Valentine's Day category.
2. Search for Keepsake box
3. The search shows Keepsake Box - Valentine's Day. It should show "Wedding Gifts"

What good is a hidden category if it turns up in the search results.

You may already know this...To save time, I think you can download categories and select the hidden column. (1/0). Of course, it isn't automatic.
