Google Analytics Conversion Tracking

Per a suggestion on my post regarding Bandwidth - I set up Google Analytics three days ago. I love it and it is mostly working.

However - it doesn't track any conversions.

I followed the guide from 3dcart and have the following code in the footer of Checkout #4

I've had about 12 orders since I set this up and none of them are showing in Google Analytics - it is bringing in page hits, visitor info, etc. etc.

I believe if you're using the new tracking code, the Ecommerce feature doesn't work. That was the case with me. But once I changed it back to the old code (the Legacy Tracking Code), orders started showing.

Hope that helps (there's more info here about this "problem", but I don't remember exactly what forum it was discussed...try a search for Google or Analytics)

I'm using the old tracking code I believe. I'm using the code that matches that in the guide provided by 3DCart. I contacted support and they had me move my tracking code to my global left footer. They said this would put the tracking code above the conversion code needed for analytics and it should work.

Unfortunately I have to get some sales now to test it and those have been sparse the last few days.

I'll let you know if this works.

Ok - it works now.

I'm using the old code as described in the Google Analytics paper from 3DCarts.

There is tracking code and conversion code. The analytics paper refers to conversion code. Tracking code is used for your CPC tracking I believe.

Anyway - the TRACKING code was in my global footer.

The ANALYTICS code for orders was in my Checkout #4 file.

All I had to do was move the TRACKING code from the Global Footer to the Global Left Banner.

This was per Jimmy in suppport. He said this was to get the tracking code 'above' the other code.

Anyway - this morning my orders with dollars started showing up in my analytics data.

I see that this thread is from over a year ago. I was wondering if there was any new info. I'm trying to install/set up Google Analytics etc and I'm not having much success, particularly with setting up the goals (because the pages are dynamic) and setting up the eCommerce part.

Would appreciate any info. I'm getting soooo frustrated with this!!

I'm also not seeing my conversions but now it's Nov. 2010 - the new code should be working by now.

@GonzaloGil - thanks so much for the link. Although I had already followed those instructions I discovered that I had left out the </script> at the end of the conversion script in Checkout 4 ! Aaarrghh. Glad it's something obvious though, hopefully all will work now. I appreciate the response.

Why is that when most of the tracking (except for checkout process) is done under "http://"?

You want the script to reference HTTPS, the script will be on your website at all times and you want to prevent this from triggering a security warning during checkout for being HTTP instead HTTPS.

Here is the long answer.
The way 3dcart is setup, it has a hard time keeping http and https straight. You can end up on any of your pages in https very easily. If a customer gets an error message in the checkout pages, that can send them to the web site in https, and from then on they are browsing the site in https. Also, if you click View Store from the admin, more likely than not, you will get the site in https. I have run across other ways that https presents itself to the customer on non-checkout pages.

Some sites, have a wall between secure and unsecure pages that can never be crossed, 3dcart has a problem keeping the two separate, that is why everything on your site should either have a relative reference (/xxxxx without the http or https) this is for internal links, or be https.

I would really appreciate if you can send me any issues that you experienced with this. The way the system is configured, the HTTP and HTTPS are supposed to be handled in the most optimal way for visitors and search engines. You're right, some carts have a separated checkout that might not even be hosted in your own domain name, in those cases the entire site is HTTP with no HTTPS version available, and when checking out you're basically redirected to an HTTPS checkout externally hosted.

The way it should be working,
- Website is HTTP including home page, products, categories, content pages, etc.
- Checkout is HTTPS, either Single Page or Multi-page.
- Admin is HTTPS.
- Clicking VIEW STORE from admin should take you to HTTP.
- Only HTTP should be indexed in search engines.
- Going back to any product or category page after accessing checkout takes the visitor back to HTTP.

Please let me know if you're experiencing anything different.

It's also important to keep in mind that if you don't have a dedicated SSL then you also have a cross-domain reference for admin and checkout. Getting a dedicated SSL optimizes the transition since everything occurs under one domain.
