how do I change sidebar nav subcategories hover...?

So there's the sidebar nav, in Modern Living HTML5 theme, and my settings are for categories to display as links in the nav every page. When hovering over the category links though, a subnav of subcategories pops up which is partly covering the category links. Is there an accordion type of nav for the subcategories under each category? If not, how do I disable the subcategories from displaying when hovering over the categories?
