Switching to core template

Hi, I would like to switch my template over to a core template - I have a pretty old one right now. Is there a way to work on the template in the background before making it live online? I have a few tweaks that I would like to make before it goes live.

I asked this question a few years ago and 3dcart Support told me that the only way to do that is to do set up a development store with them. They can move stuff over so you can test with products in the database and once you are good with the new customized template, they can move the template files over to the live store. There were fees associated with this.

I set up a development store when I changed mine a few years ago. If I remember correctly, there was a setup fee (less than $100) to duplicate your store with a small database of products. The monthly cost was around $20
